Depression is a medical condition, not a mood you can decide your way out of. It can bring persistent hopelessness, loss of interest in things you used to care about, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, physical fatigue, and in some cases thoughts of suicide. It can follow a clear trigger, or arrive without one.
Diagnosis comes first. We rule out medical contributors such as thyroid dysfunction, vitamin deficiency, and medication side effects before settling on a treatment plan.
From there, treatment usually combines medication management and therapy. Finding the right antidepressant is often a process of adjustment, and we stay in close contact through it rather than writing a prescription and sending you off for three months.
For adults whose depression has not responded to at least two antidepressants, we also offer Spravato (esketamine) in our offices.
Depression frequently occurs alongside anxiety. If both are present, we treat them together rather than separately.
