Children and teens experience mental health conditions differently than adults. Symptoms often show up as changes in behavior, school performance, sleep, or friendships rather than something a child can easily put into words. Our providers look at the whole picture, including what parents and caregivers are seeing, before recommending a treatment plan.
Common reasons families come to us include ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood changes, and behavior concerns.
The first appointment is an evaluation. A parent or legal guardian attends with the child. The provider asks about current concerns, medical and family history, development, and school, and may ask for input from teachers or your pediatrician.
Afterward, we explain what we found and talk through options with you.
Consider an evaluation if changes in your child’s mood or behavior last more than a few weeks, affect school or relationships, or simply worry you.
If your child is in crisis or talking about harming themselves, call or text 988 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Our articles on teen internet addiction and signs of teenage drug use cover two of the concerns parents ask us about most.
