What is Hepatitis C and why does it matter?

Hepatitis C is a virus that affects your liver. Left untreated, it can cause long-term liver damage, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer. Recent research shows that people who use injection drugs or have history of substance use are at higher risk. The good news: modern treatments are highly effective — with cure rates above 95 % in many cases.Screening and early treatment mean you can get ahead of the virus rather than letting it define you.

We recommend testing if you:

  • Have used or currently use injection drugs or shared needles

  • Have had long-term alcohol use, or other liver-risk exposures

  • Received blood products or organ transplants before wider screening (pre-1992)

  • Have abnormal liver function tests with no known cause

  • Want peace of mind and to stay proactive about your health
And according to guidelines, routine screening is now recommended for all adults 18 – 79 years at least once.

Our Process

Testing – Simple, clear, confidential

  • Blood test for HCV antibody – checks whether you’ve ever been exposed.

  • If positive, we immediately conduct a HCV RNA test to check for active infection (virus still in your blood).

  • Together, we review results, explain them clearly, and set a treatment plan if needed.

  • We work with you whether you’re being treated for addiction or receiving primary care — we coordinate with your whole health team.

Treatment – What to expect

  • Once active infection is confirmed, we’ll discuss medication options — modern direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) make treatment shorter, simpler, and far more tolerable than older regimens.

  • The typical treatment time for many patients is 8 – 12 weeks, depending on your individual situation.

  • During treatment, we monitor your progress with labs and check-ins to make sure you’re responding well.

  • After treatment completes, we test again to confirm sustained virologic response (SVR) — meaning the virus is no longer detectable and you’re effectively cured.

  • Even if you’re in recovery for addiction, rest assured: protocol works in those settings, and we’re experienced in co-managing both.
